I have never been a huge fan of comedy stand-up shows, perhaps because I often conjur an image of some dim lit 80s club on the upper east side with dudes who dress bad and try really hard to be bold and crass.. or maybe I recall being in middle school and watching some late night at the Apollo or HBO special.. it all seemed horrendous and painful.
But who knew there was such a thing as indie comedy.. or smart comedy..? On Tuesday night I went to see the 6th Anniversary Tell Your Friends show at the bar Lolita on the Lower East Side. For $5 (still cant believe that I entered a real show for five dollars.. ) I was highly entertained by a variety of comedians including Christian Finnegan, Todd Berry, Hannibal Buress, Jim Gaffigan, Janeane Garofalo (she of course i knew about before), and music performance by Mike Doughty and Sean Bones. These guys are actually all pretty big timers.. so I guess I lucked out.
Liam McEneaney, the host of this show for the past 6 years recently produced a film about TYF – the clip is here. I actually found the material from the Tuesday show funnier than this clip..but would definitely be interested in seeing the film and going back to show another Tuesday night.
Also – the house band was good – ‘A Brief View of the Hudson’.
